TIME and MATERIALS

A group exhibition featuring new work by
Bridgette Buckley Studio
Manifold
and Merkled Studio
with
site specific installation and artwork by
James Jankowiak

Show Duration: July 13 - October 5, 2012
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday July 13, 6 - 9pm

CHICAGO, IL: MANIFOLD is pleased to present its upcoming group exhibition, TIME and MATERIALS, opening Friday July 13th, 2012 with a reception open to the public from 6 to 9pm, located in the gallery at 4426 N Ravenswood Ave. This exhibition will run through October 5th. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 12 to 6pm and Saturday 12 to 4pm.

Drawing from the traditional use of the term among craftspeople as a quantifiable measure for projects with uncertain outcomes, TIME and MATERIALS is a point of departure and a guiding principal for the works of art and design in this group exhibition.

Chicago furniture designer Bridgette Buckley departs from developing furniture and lighting for production in order to embrace craft and explore the relationships people establish with inanimate objects. Structures of fabric playing against wood are transformed and illuminated by the intimate contexts of people interacting with them.

Through painstaking effort and humble materials, artist James Jankowiak creates a site specific installation, further delving into his fascination with mutation through repetition. This work, along with his paintings, questions the primacy of foreground to background, architecture to object, contrast to dissolution.

From the metal workshop and design studio adjoining the gallery, Manifold puts forth a new series of tables and a bench. The contrast between the crisp edges of steel, the soft textures of wood, and the delicacy of brass wire focuses attention on furniture as form beyond function.

Designer and fabricator, Kari Merkl of Merkled Studio, presents the latest iterations in her furniture line. These pieces strike a refined balance between technology and hand-craft with inventive combinations of precision fabricated steel, leather, and hand-dyed felt.

IBM’s 100th anniversary as a corporation, marked in 2011, offered an opportunity to reflect on the core ideas that have defined the company from its birth to the present day. The company’s evolution from a small business making scales, time clocks and tabulating machines to a globally integrated enterprise with more than 400,000 employees, a distinctive culture and a strong vision for the future is a tale of big bets, lessons learned and discoveries that have transformed the way we all work and live.

Telling that story required a process of research, curation, design, writing and publication carried out by multiple teams. The result: 100 iconic moments when IBM and IBMers have contributed to the science of information, the reinvention of the modern corporation and new ways in which the world literally works.

Snarkitecture’s first solo exhibition, Funiture, consists of new works and site-specific installations, which combine to create a landscape of childlike wonderment. These works emerge from a world where Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen manipulate objects, materials and finishes in the pursuit of new and imaginative results. Funiture reconsiders our reality, often centering on creating confusion — whether with familiar objects in unexpected contexts, or the dissolution of recognizable volumes into irrational forms.

Enhanced research capabilities, new distribution channels and crowdfunding encourage many designers to produce their own work, bypassing traditional licensing models. Relationship by Design explores the relationship formed between designer and manufacturer during these self-initiated projects. Innovations in materials, processes and typologies are often the result of designers working closely with manufacturers. Shared-Practice.com is curating this groundbreaking exhibition of contemporary design at NeoCon 2012, exploring the relationship between designers and manufacturers with the works of 14 internationally known, Chicago based design studios. The selection will include a wide range of objects from furniture to tabletop products.

“I came to ID from Harley-Davidson with a marketing and brand strategy background and left with new skills and a new perspective. Because of ID, I now approach problems as systems, not one-off challenges, and reflexively look at solving these systems through deep empathy for the consumer. Changing the way I see and approach the world – that’s perhaps the greatest impact ID had on me.”
– Jonathan Campbell, MDM ’08, Senior Strategist, Continuum, Boston
