The Tugendhat House, located in Brno, Czech Republic, is the last major home built by Mies van der Rohe in Europe before moving to the United States. Built in 1930 and situated on a sloping grade, the house was designed as a large and luxurious villa for Grete and Fritz Tugendhat. The house has been largely not accessible to the public throughout its history, but in 2005, plans were made by the Czech Republic to restore this structure. This lecture will feature architects Iveta Cerná, Head of Villa Tugendhat, Secretary of THICOM Tugendhat House International Committee, and Ivo Hammer, Conservator/Restorer and Chairman of THICOM Tugendhat House International Committee for an illustrated talk about the restoration project.

Along with an ever-growing public awareness for contemporary art comes an increased interest in architecture and design. As a result more and more young American designers’ careers are being launched not in showrooms, but in galleries, with collectors commissioning interiors and furnishings that finally matches the adventurous spirit of their art collections. This blurring of hierarchies has created a sophisticated new breed of practitioner who effortlessly navigates the worlds of art, architecture, and furniture design. The Minneapolis-based designer Matt Olson of RO/LU and the New York architect Rafael de Cárdenas will be discussing this trend together with the Rauschenberg Foundation’s Executive Director Christy MacLear, and collector Adam Lindemann. The panel will be moderated by Felix Burrichter, founder and editor of PIN–UP Magazine.

Bertrand Goldberg: Reflections examines the sources of and influences on Goldberg’s vision by looking at his personal collection of art and artifacts, his friendships with artists and intellectuals, his personal photographs, and his designs for furniture, jewelry, and functional fabrications, to provide an understanding of the man behind the public image. Unlike many architects, Goldberg did not keep a sketchbook, preferring to solve problems directly. The Arts Club’s exhibition is a rare glimpse into the “studio” of one of the most innovative architects of the 20th century.

Many of the featured designers, including Ineke Hans and Ron Gilad, have focused on creative optimizations or subversions of traditional objects, while others, such as information designer Aaron Koblin, work on the frontier of new media systems that are shaping the way we see, think, and communicate.
