BLACK/NOIR
BLACK/NOIR
PAVILION OPENING: JUNE 5 6-9PM
We can only discern black by contrast or by white (light), the interplay of the two opposing visual phenomena is what allows us to see the shape, contrast, and texture. Physically, because black absorbs all light, it converts it to energy.
Black is a conundrum. Black is an absence, not a presence, yet visually, suggests a material density and a physical presence comparable to sculpture. It’s a color/noncolor that has become associated with glamour rather than gloom; it speaks of the city and the dirt and darkness of the industrial age—oil, smoke, tar. But also it is visual shorthand that says slick, mysterious, sexy, businesslike, and official.
pavilion has selected an artist, designer and metal smith, whose work embraces BLACK/NOIR
The exhibition of new works includes:
Lukas Machnik's Black drawing series, works on paper, Chicago.
Jonas Fernando Pires Limited edition cut steel lamps, Paris.
Nora Renaud ‘ADAL’ collection, limited edition jewelry, Paris.
LUKAS MACHNIK
LUKAS MACHNIK’S new series of works on paper are process driven intense explorations of what is seen and not seen. Burned, scraped, inked, enhanced, collaged surfaces tell a story of energy, space, absence-not-presence. The sensual surfaces create an intimate dialogue.
pavilion is pleased to continue its dialogue with contemporary French design and welcomes:
JONAS FERNANDO PIRES
Born in Paris in 1987, JONAS FERNANDO PIRES quickly showed a particular attraction for architecture.
Material predilections of the artist are steel and concrete. His work is clean, inspired by minimalism. Architects Tadao Ando and Mies van der Rohe are his references but Jonas Fernando Pires creative language is, creative freedom, the rule quality, enrolling in a traditional sense.
His latest creations center on the idea of mood lighting, with amazing works where he revisits spaces with shadow and light.
Recently he has presented at 2013 Maison Objet, L'Eclaireur, Vip Room Paris, Cannes, and Salone di Mobile 2013, Milan.
The Chambers Hotel in NYC during ICFF will host his first exhibition in the United States with the French Design Connection, and at Pavilion in Chicago in June
NORA RENAUD
NORA RENAUD'S jewelry project, ‘ADAL’— has been developed in collaboration with some/things agency/ sensual pieces that explore physical transformation & the animalistic aspect of movement, they reveal a disturbing beauty & sexuality. Subtle, willowy sculptures in trailing organic and slender like nerves, veins, tentacles or claws, invincible in their frameworks of oxidized and treated metal.
Please feel free to contact Pavilion for further information on any items of interest. All works are available for sale or special order.
